Injection Technique

Testosterone
  • Administer 1mL of this medication intramuscularly once per week.

What you need:

  • 25-gauge needle 
  • Large gauge needle (18g, 20g, 22g)
  • 1-3 mL syringe
  • Alcohol wipe
  • Medication vial

Step-By-Step

  • Remove 25g needle from syringe and replace with large gauge needle.
  • Insert a large gauge needle into the vial and turn upside down.
  • Pull the plunger of the syringe down to draw medication to the 1 mL mark on the syringe.
    • Patience is key! This medication is thick/viscous and takes a little time to draw out of the vial.
  • Withdraw needle from the vial.
  • Before removing the large gauge needle, draw a small amount of air into the syringe to draw out medication from inside the needle.
  • Remove the large gauge needle and replace it with the 25g needle.
  • Gently push the plunger of the syringe to remove air from the syringe/needle (until you see a tiny dribble emerge from point of the needle. 
  • Now you are ready to inject. 

Injection Time!

  • Medication is to be injected into either Left or Right Glute muscle and alternated every week. 
  • After cleaning with alcohol, inject into the top outer corner of the glute muscle (Quickly! Hesitation may increase discomfort from needle entering the skin).
  • Firmly push the plunger of the syringe until all medication has been released from the syringe (Again, patience is key!).
  • After administration of medication, pull the needle straight out of the muscle (Massage injection site for better spread and absorption of medication). 
  • Dispose of the needle in an appropriate safety container (Preferably an actual sharps container) to prevent needle stick accidents that may cause injury to yourself or others. 

Post Injection: 

  • Please report any usual occurrences to the nurse (Bailey) and Dr. Khokhar, such as:
  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Redness
  • Warmth
  • Swelling
  • Bruising 

HGC (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin)/Pregnyl
  • Administer 50 units 2 times per week on 2 CONSECUTIVE days. 
  • Keep Refrigerated!

What you need:

  • 31g insulin syringe (100-unit capacity)
  • Medication vial
  • Alcohol wipe

Step-By-Step

  • Gently remove cap from insulin needle and insert needle into medication vial (Needle is very small and easily bent/broken). 
  • Turn upside down.
  • Pull plunger of insulin syringe down to draw medication to the 50 unit line.
  • Gently withdraw insulin needle from vial.
  • Now you are ready to inject. 

Injection Time!

  • This medication is administered subcutaneously (injected into fat, not muscle). 
  • Locate the area of fat below the belly button and clean it with an alcohol wipe.
  • Insert an insulin needle into the selected area of fat and push the plunger of the syringe to inject medication.
  • Once all the medication has been released from the syringe, pull the needle straight out. 
  • Dispose of those needle in a designated sharps container to prevent accidental needle sticks that cause injury to yourself or others. 
  • Again, do this one 2 CONSECUTIVE days. (For example: Mon & Tues)

Post Injection: 

  • Please report any usual occurrences to the nurse (Bailey) and Dr. Khokhar, such as:
  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Redness
  • Warmth
  • Swelling
  • Bruising 

MIC
  • Administer 100 units of this medication once per week.

What you need:

  • 31g insulin syringe (100-unit capacity)
  • Medication vial
  • Alcohol wipe

Step-By-Step

  • Gently remove cap from insulin needle and insert needle into medication vial (Needle is very small and easily bent/broken). 
  • Turn upside down.
  • Pull plunger of insulin syringe down to draw medication to the 100 unit line.
  • Gently withdraw the insulin needle from the vial.
  • Now you are ready to inject. 

Injection Time!

  • This medication is administered subcutaneously (injected into fat, not muscle). 
  • Locate the area of fat below the belly button and clean it with an alcohol wipe.\
  • Insert an insulin needle into the selected area of fat and push the plunger of the syringe to inject medication. 
  • To prevent bruising/welts, inject 50 units in one area and 50 units in another. 
  • Once all the medication has been released from the syringe, pull the needle straight out. 
  • Dispose of the needle in a designated sharps container to prevent accidental needle sticks that cause injury to yourself or others.
